Behaviour

Non-dog lovers may never quite understand the special relationship we have with our pets, but we know that we owe dogs so much, thanks for the support and love they give.

At the home we deal with many dogs that have been harmed by their previous owners, some mentally and others physically. We address the mental behaviour of all our dogs, by only using positive reinforcement techniques.

We are especially concerned about the importance of Attachment; this is the mental stability needs of a dog. Dogs can only learn when they are in a fit and good place (mentally) to do so, bringing dogs back to a good state of physical health is our starting point.

Once physically fit we then can commence with behaviour, starting with the dogs understands they are safe and secure with the environment at the home. Being consistent with the dogs “maintenance behaviours” adds to the feeling of wellbeing, this is ensuring that we are consistent with feeding, cleaning, and movement regimes.

Dogs are social animals and they need to be social, finding our dogs friends (another dog) to share its kennel with, to play with and be comforted by is important to us. That is why all of our kennels hold more than one dog.

Trust and confidence from our staff aids even further, being consistent with commands and handling, giving positive rewards all help to rehabilitate a well behaved dog.

The final part of our programme is exercise and play, designed in a structured way to stimulate learning and fun. Bono is finding a treat inside a bag of straw.

All of this because we love our dogs and want you to have the best start you can with your new best friend once you take them home.

Our work is only possible thanks to the great kindness of those who give us donations or remember us in their wills. We are truly grateful to our supporters for their great generosity.
